A proper model simulates crack evolution and has a strong coupling relationship between the displacement field and the crack shape. The standard 3DFFF model assumes that the crack deformation is considered to be elastic and is equivalent to a second Piola-Kirchhoff tensor. In this paper, we propose an improved 3DFFF model, which combines the displacement field and crack. Firstly, we consider the crack propagation process by considering the change of elastic modulus of the sample. Based on the crack propagation mechanism, the influence of crack propagation on the displacement field of the sample is taken into account. Simultaneously, the crack tip stress that is related to the critical strength of the specimen is considered and the crack propagation speed is calculated. Secondly, two-dimensional (2D) propagation of cracks are simulated by the combination of the displacement field and the crack evolution model, and three-dimensional (3D) cracks are simulated by the combination of the displacement field and the 3DFFF model. According to these models, the influence of the crack on the displacement field is modeled and the stress accumulation, the crack propagation speed, and the deformation characteristics are analyzed, respectively. At last, the accuracy of the proposed model is verified by comparing with the experimental results.

The main test processes of the experiment are as follows: (1)When the cohesion of the soil is loaded, a small amount of water will absorb the cracks, and there will be little slippage of the adhesive part. When a certain amount of water has been absorbed, the soils will become soft and form a well-developed pore system. (2)Pour water into the water tank to form cracks. Set the water absorption time, and the absorption plate and the water tank are needed to monitor the real-time process of water absorption and dewatering. After the absorption plate is removed, the sample is extracted, and the weights of the two sides of the sample are measured. The water absorption ratio is expressed by (2), and the water absorption rate is expressed by (3). The time interval is set to 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 hours, respectively. (3)Pour water until the crack reaches the bottom of the mold (according to the water absorption plate type, as shown in the table below), and test cracks, which are 45 mm long and 30 mm wide, are formed. To ensure that the plastic package covers the whole sample, the sample should be placed in the water at a high altitude, for example, more than 100 mm above the bottom of the mold. If there is no water in the mold, add water until the water level in the mold just exceeds the minimum level of the plastic package. However, there should be a sufficient amount of water to ensure the occurrence of the whole water absorption test. After the water absorption, slowly extract the sample, remove the plastic package, install the other side of the sample in the test box, fix the bottom with clamps, and wait until the sample is completely dry. (4)Once the top of the sample reaches the bottom of the test box, load the compressive stress at a rate of 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 MPa/s with a load frame. Then, record the displacement signal of the sample, the stress signal of the sample, the crack signal of the sample, and the force signal of the sample. The waveform of the force and stress signals can be converted into a displacement signal with a certain time interval.
